2 How to decode a Mazda VIN

It wasn’t until 1981 that VINs were standardized in the United States. There has been universal recognition of the 17 digits since then.

Using all ten numerical digits (0-9) and all the letters in the alphabet (minus I, O, and Q), these meanings are expressed.

Ultimately, the question is: what are these numbers telling us?

First position: country of origin

There are three digits in the first three digits that represent the world manufacturer identifier (WMI). As indicated by the first number, the car was manufactured in the country indicated by the second number.

The Mazda logo generally consists of a 1, 4, or J. Japan is represented by the letter J, and the United States by the letter 1 or 4.

Positions 2-3: manufacturer information

We can learn more about the manufacturer by looking at the next two digits. This will be an F for Mazda since the second digit represents the brand.

You can tell which type of Mazda you drive by the third digit.

Positions 4-8: vehicle-specific information

Vehicle-specific information can be found in the following five digits of your VIN. This information identifies more details about your Mazda based on its size, style, and trim level.

Position 9: the VIN check digit

A fake VIN could be easily generated since most of the digits are standardized. This is where the ninth digit comes in! In order to prevent fake VINs, the ninth digit is a unique “check digit” based on the other numbers in the VIN.

Position 10: model year

Since the system of referencing model years is limited to a few numbers and letters, it becomes more complicated over time. A growing number of VINs reuse digits from previous model years. There is no use of the letters U, Z, I, O, or Q.

Position 11: assembly plant

A Mazda’s 11th digit tells you where it was assembled or which particular plant assembled it. Mazda’s Hiroshima plant, for example, will have a 0, or Hofu will have a 1.

Positions 12-17: vehicle serial number

Your Mazda’s final six digits are entirely unique. Car serial numbers are represented by them. Vehicle VINs are generally assigned during assembly and are unique to each vehicle.
