On the history of greeting cards
The origins of what we know now as greeting cards go back to ancient Egypt and China. Ancient Egyptians had sent greetings to each other via papyrus scrolls. How cool it would be to receive one of those today! Early Chinese were also used to celebrate the Chinese New Year by exchanging messages of goodwill and best wishes. Now, let us move from BC to the middle ages, specifically to 1400 A.D; it was when the Europeans started to know handmade greeting cards. However, exchanging them was not common because of their high prices.
It was not until the beginning of the 19th century that greeting and Valentine’s cards became affordable and, therefore, popular. Among the preserved examples of those early greeting cards is a Victorian Christmas card, which was “one of the first sent in Britain”, as the BBC states. It was sold in an auction in 2001 for £22,500 to become one of the most expensive Christmas items sold, contrary to its original cost. In the U.S, greeting cards turned into an industry in 1856 on the hands of Louis Prang, an immigrant German, who initiated a small lithographic business near Boston. Moving to the 19th century, the year 1941 witnessed the establishment of the Greeting Card Industry from which came what we know today as the Greeting Card Association.
