10 Animals That Outlive People

Nowadays, thanks to development in science and medicine, many people live till their 70s, 80s or even more. On the other hand, animals’ average age are usually way less than those of humans. For instance, the average age of dogs is only 20 years. However, there are some animals out there that live longer than the average age of people. Here are 10 animals that outlive people.

1 Giant tortoise:

The giant tortoise is a type of tortoises that can easily live more than 100 years old. Actually it is said that the minimum age of this kind is 150 years old, while the maximum age is 250 years old. It is worth mentioning that these types of tortoises can be found in Madagascar.

2 Tuatara:

Tuataras are reptiles and sometimes they are called “living fossils”. They can be found in one only place which is New Zealand. The tuatara is similar in shape to lizards but it is not a lizard. It is said that some tuataras can live up to 200 years.

3 Lobster:

The known average age of lobsters is 60 years old. However, some of them can live more than 100 years. The oldest lobster that has ever caught was 140 years old.  

4 Immortal jelly fish(Turritopsis nutricula):

Turritopsis nutricula is a type of jelly fish which is very small and it lives in the Mediterranean Sea. This kind of jelly fish is not only thought to live longer than people, but it is thought to be immortal. It is believed to be immortal because it was noticed that every time it reaches the adult stage it reverts back to a younger stage.

5 Antarctic sponge:

From their name, it is obvious that it is a kind of sponges that lives in the Antarctic Ocean. It is believed that due to the low temperature of the Antarctic Ocean, this sponge has a very slow growth rate. It was once recorded that one of these sponges lived for 1550 years.

6 Ocean Quahog:

Ocean Quahogs live in the North Atlantic Ocean and they grow very slowly. People eat quahogs especially in North America, Iceland and Norway. In addition, ocean quahog is an important ingredient for cod recipes. The oldest Quahog which was ever found was in 2006 and it was 507 years old.

7 Koi Fish:

Koi fish is a beautiful type of fish which is mainly kept for decorative purposes. Koi can be found in central Europe and Asia, especially in Japan. The average age of Koi is 50 years old. However, in 1974 the oldest koi fish was found and it was 226 years old. It is important to mention that in Japan Koi are symbols of love and friendship.

8 Bowhead whale:

Bowhead whales can live easily up to 150 years old. In fact, many of the Bowhead whales lived longer than this. The oldest one that have ever found was 211 years old. It is also worth mentioning that the Bowhead whale is the second in size after the blue whale.

9 Red Sea Urchin:

The red sea urchin usually lives in warm water, whether on rocky bottoms or near the coral reefs. Red sea urchins does not has a fixed lifespan. Some of them live around 30 years while others live more than 200 years. It is also thought that the red sea urchin has the longest lifespan.

10 Orca:

Orcas are kind of whales and they are also known as killer whales. They are one of the most powerful animals in the oceans. Orcas lifespan is around 50 years old, but it was noticed that female orcas can live up to 90 years old. However, the oldest orca that has ever been found was about 101 years old.
